As a Junior Unix Technician you will be responsible for: BAU, DR & Some Project Work in the area of Unix (for MS, Support & DR customers)

Job summary

To work under guidance from the Unix Technical Lead and senior members of the Unix team and to provide assistance and support to customers and client personnel as part of the services covered by Software Support contracts, including BAU tasks such as Incident and Change Management, AIX projects, and Linux projects. To provide assistance to internal and external personnel in the use of Unix technology throughout the Organisation as directed by the Unix Technical Lead.
Dimensions
* To provide 1st and 2nd level support for all AIX & LINUX based systems.
* Assist in the day to day administration and control of UNIX infrastructure.
* To perform client installation, configuration, fault diagnosis and remediation on site, logging in remotely to cloud and customer environments


Key result areas

* To undertake a development programme as directed and supported by the Unix Technical Lead to progress into a Unix Technician
* To provide 1st and 2nd level support after a period of training that will include managing the Incident queue, resolution of incidents where applicable or escalating where needed
* Managing the Change queue and scheduling
* To ensure the implementation of good practice and compliance with internal procedures, routines and protocol including security, safety and regulatory
* Carry out Disaster Recovery testing as part of the services offered to customers by the company
* Take part in internal and external project work as required
* Complete automated patching via Ansible
* Produce documentation and share knowledge within team
* To provide assistance and support to customers and client personnel as part of the services covered by Software Support contracts (including Managed Service customers).
* Provide assistance to internal and external personnel in the use of UNIX technology throughout the organisation as directed by the Line Manager
* To understand and fulfil the responsibilities for secure management of personal data of both internal and external customers in line with the EU General Data Protection Regulation 2018


Key Personal Requirements

* Experience or background in the IT industry
* Some AIX / Unix / Linux exposure
* Experience in a customer facing role
* Basic understanding of IT terminology and concepts
* Interest in various areas of IT
* IT based qualification and willingness to learn and develop further
* Open to learning and new ways of working
* Interest in progressing within the Unix field
* Ambitious and driven
* Excellent problem solving skills
* Ability to follow procedures and instructions well and offer improvements to current procedures
* Excellent communication skills internally and externally
* Ability to demonstrate initiative
* Team player and flexible to work outside of usual working times
